Frequently Asked Question On Protecting Your Vehicle From Dangerous Microbes!
Is there a test method to determine if Microbe Shield® is present?
The Microbe Shield® technology is based on an active ingredient that, in most cases, can be easily detected with an appropriate test or a tagging agent can be added.
How should a microbe contaminated surface be treated and what preparation is necessary prior to applying the Microbe Shield® treatment?
Microbes can be extremely hazardous causing bacteria and viruses like H1N1, MRSA, and super bugs like C. Difcile. Target surfaces should be thoroughly cleaned and any residue from cleaning agents must be rinsed from the surfaces to
be treated by Microbe Shield®. We have created a compatible cleaning product that also is a disinfectant. When used in tandem with Microbe Shield® solutions, it is a perfect combination of cleaner and antimicrobial.
How does the Microbe Shield® technology get applied?
Microbe Shield® trained, certified technicians match the latest application techniques to the specic target market and clients’ scope of work following established standards and protocols. Using those guidelines, trained technicians
will primarily use our electrostatic application process, which utilizes a spray wands with nozzles that impart an electrostatic charge to provide a very uniform and thorough coverage of the targeted surface. Hand-wiping is also used for small jobs like small electronic devices. Whichever application process is used, the treated surface is protected with the proven, affordable, safe and long-lasting Microbe Shield® technology and solutions.
Do the applicators receive any special kind of training?
Yes. We pride ourselves on providing a superior training program. To ensure proper use of Microbe Shield®, each applicator receives four hours of online classroom training, and four to six hours of on-site training. In addition, they receive a training guidebook and ongoing access to our technical expertise.
Are there any safety concerns after application is complete?
Microbe Shield® will not give off any gases after the application, since the antimicrobial is permanently bound to the surface it protects. It does not leach onto other surfaces, or lose strength over time. As long as this surface is kept clean with normal cleaning procedures, the surfaces will continue to repel any microbial growth. Extensive toxicological testing shows the antimicrobial does not cross the skin barrier. In fact, Microbe Shield® is so safe that is it used on baby wipes.
When was the Microbe Shield® technology first developed?
Microbe Shield® technology was rst developed by Dow Corning in the late 1970s primarily for use in carpet textiles. Recently Microbe Shield® has been used in many different industries, including healthcare, restoration, hospitality and buildings. In addition it has been used by niche market sectors like the NFL, sports facilities and
the airline sectors. We are also bringing this technology to many other additional markets such as the agriculture, equestrian and veterinary sectors. Also, Microbe Shield® and its claims are registered with EPA.
Is there re-growth of microbes after a Microbe Shield® treatment?
Because of its unique chemistry, Microbe Shield® provides long-term protection against re-growth of microbes and related bacteria and future contamination on treated surfaces.
How does the Microbe Shield® technology work?
The active ingredient in the Microbe Shield® anti-microbial technology forms a colorless, odorless, positively charged polymer, which chemically bonds to the treated surface. You could think of it as a layer of electrically charged swords. When a microorganism comes in contact with the treated surface, the quaternary amine sword punctures the cell membrane and the electrical charge shocks the cell. Since nothing is transferred to the now dead cell, the antimicrobial doesn’t lose strength and the sword is ready for the next cell to contact it.
What is the purpose of the silane portion of the molecule?
Silanes are an extremely efficient bonding agent, which can be coupled to other molecules and then used to permanently bond those molecules to a target surface. This process transparently and harmlessly modies target surface properties and transforms them to a material that will not support microbial growth. In other words,
it is the “glue” that holds the “spike” to the target surface. Are the Microbe Shield® products quaternary compounds?
Yes and no. The Microbe Shield® active ingredient is an organofunctional silane, but part of the molecule is a quarternary compound. Unlike traditional quats, which have a limited kill spectrum, the Microbe Shield® technology provides long-term protection and controls a wide range on microorganisms including bacteria, fungus, algae, and mold.
What is the difference between and other anti-microbial products on the market?
Conventional anti-microbial products penetrate living cells and kill by way of poisoning or microbial metal leaching the organism. They are designed to act quickly and dissipate rapidly to avoid adverse effects to humans and animals due to their very toxic ingredients. Most commercial anti-microbials used for treating surfaces do a fairly good job of getting a quick kill on bacteria and fungi, although most have a limited spectrum of effectiveness. The Microbe Shield® technology and solutions take a totally unique approach. They provide an effective initial microbial kill when applied, like the conventional methods, but they also provide long-term control of microbial growth on treated surfaces, for the lifespan of that surface. The surface itself is transparently and harmlessly modified to make the anti-microbial active for the normal life of the target surface onto which it is applied.
Does Microbe Shield® give off gases during or after application?
No. It does not volatilize, dissipate, or leach onto other surfaces or into the environment. Its chemistry polymerizes where it is applied and forms a permanent bond that lasts for the life of the treated surface. Normal cleaning should not remove the treatment.
How long does the Microbe Shield® treatment last?
Since the cured Microbe Shield® antimicrobial solution is non-volatile, insoluble, and non-leaching, the treatment should last for the life of the treated surface. The life of the treated surface depends on a number of factors, not the least of which is surface preparation.
How will using Microbe Shield® technology effect air conditioning systems?
Microbe Shield® actually improve the overall performance of A/C coils by minimizing organic fouling of surfaces. Microbe Shield® helps minimize microbial attack and attachment to the finished surfaces. Another added benefit is that it acts as a permanently bonded soil releasing agent. Enhances the overall performance of ventilation systems against microbes, bacteria and foul odors.
Is Microbe Shield® permeable to moisture?
Yes. Moisture that is in or on the treated target surface passes through the treatment. After curing, the treatment is somewhat hydrophobic (water repellent)
